The purpose of this note is to demonstrate that the Holy Spirit can not be thought of as merely an impersonal force, but that it has all the attributes of a living, thinking spiritual entity. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that this living, thinking spiritual entity is God.

Selected verses that follow demonstrate that God's Spirit can speak, think, get angry, be grieved, teach us, comfort us, and guide us.

Selected verses also demonstrate that this personage is God Himself, and not a seperate entity.

The Holy Spirit speaks:

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." (Acts 13:2)

Coming over to us, he took Paul's belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, "The Holy Spirit says, 'In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles'" (Acts 21:11)

While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them." (Acts 10:19-20)

"The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your forefathers when he said through Isaiah the prophet: 'Go to this people and say...'" (Acts 28:25) [quote is from Isaiah 6:9-10, where the YHWH is the one speaking, implying that the Holy Spirit is YHWH]

So, as the Holy Spirit says: 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did...' (Hebrews 3:7-9) [quote is from Psalm 95:7-11 where YHWH is the one specified as speaking, implying that the Holy Spirit is YHWH]

The Holy Spirit also testifies about this. First he says: 'This is the covenant I will make with them...' (Hebrews 10:15-17) [quote is from Jeremiah 31:33-34 where YHWH is the one specified as speaking, implying that the the Holy Spirit is YHWH]

The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them (Acts 11:12)

I know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. (Acts 20:23)

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. (Romans 8:16)

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches (Rev 2:7)

"Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas..." (Acts 1:16)

for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of the Father speaking through you. (Matt 10:20)

Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. (Mark 13:11)

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ (Luke 2:26)

for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say. (Luke 12:11)

The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me:..." (2 Sam 23:2)
He gets angry:
Should it be said, O house of Jacob: "Is the Spirit of the Lord angry? Does he do such things?" (Micah 2:7)
We can grieve Him:
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (Eph 4:30)
He teaches us, comforts us, guides us:
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever -- the Spirit of the truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." (John 14:15-17)

"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things..." (John 14:26)

"Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment..." (John 16:7-8)

"But when he, the Spirit of the Truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you." (John 16:13-14)

Then the church...was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:31)
He thinks:
It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us... (Acts 15:28)
The Holy Spirit can be lied to.
The Holy Spirit is God.
Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit...You have not lied to men but to God." (Acts 5:3-4)
The penalty for blaspheming the Holy Spirit:
"I tell you the truth, all sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." (Mark 3:28-29)
